Three ways you can simplify your life in the office

Three ways you can simplify your life in the officeThree ways you can simplify your life in the officeThe overwhelmed employee has received a lot of attention over the past few years. People have more and more work to do and are struggling to keep up with it all. People are spending less and less time with their families and not taking time to disconnect, switch off, and recharge. It has become quite hard to disconnect when we have constant access to our schmelzglas, social networking sites, news, and other sources of distraction. Work is also becoming increasingly global which requires being on at times normally spent working out or with family. The issue is that we lose sight of what is truly fruchtwein important when we run from one thing to the next. The go-go-go mindset reduces ones ability to think strategically and operate in a proactive manner. We feel that to be more successful, generate more revenue, or achieve that goal we simply need to do more. It doesnt help that when we do deliver a great product or project were rewarded with more work. Many of us actually consider being busy a badge of honor. But the reality is that we have so much going on and are pulled in so many directions that we are left feeling overwhelmed and close to burning out. We wake up one morning and realize that years have passed in a haze of deadlines and conference calls. Weve missed out on critical experiences with our kids, and weve lost touch of our true passions. Here are some of the typical things I have heard from those in my network that are run raggedI feel unhealthy. I dont have time to make proper food, get enough sleep, or work out.The emails are constant. I feel like my phone is a massagestab that cant be switched off.If I can just get through this next project Ill have some breathing space.I just cant keep up with all the firefighting.Im obviously painting a pretty dismal picture, but there is hope While we cant escape the reality of 21st-century business, steps can be taken and skills can be built to smash complexity in your life, take control, increase your energy, be more productive, and be generally happier. Its time to begin to live simply. Here are three steps you can take to simplify youReduce clutterGet clear on what is truly most importantAvoid distractions and interruptionsReduce clutterWe have become hoarders of stuff. Both professionally and personally, we retain too many things and let our lives become cluttered. We may not realize it, but all of this stuff weighs on our mind and contributes to a sense of losing control. A good first step in simplifying you is taking the time to declutter and reorganize. It is mentally liberating when we get rid of all the things that are not needed. It simplifies our environment, which subconsciously makes us feel less stressed and mentally scattered. While it may binnenseem challenging to find the time to declutter, it is certainly worth the investment. It is a valuable step toward taking control o f your life and gaining the individual clarity that seems to be out of reach for most in todays high-paced, scattered world. There really is something to be said for the minimalist movement that seems to be taking hold in many parts of the world.Get clear on what is truly most importantOne of the major issues with seemingly too much work and operating in a reactive, firefighting mode is that you lose focus on what is most important. Your time is spent on relatively lower-value activities as you get caught up reacting to requests or the latest issue. Your impact on the business is diminished, and it can seem hard to break free from it. Getting clear on what is most important, those things that will deliver the greatest impact on the business, will allow you to free yourself from the chains of reactive working and take control over your time and focus.Take some time to answer the following questionsWhat is the purpose of my role? How can I add the most value to the business? What are th e most productive and impactful activities I do?How do I produce the best work? What do I need to produce my best work? With the answers to these questions, you can begin to distill your professional priorities. The answers will reveal what activities and projects will have the greatest impact on the business and therefore your performance. It should also reveal how you can be most effective at delivering these most important things.Avoid distractions and interruptionsHow often do you check your phone? The average person does it 110 times a day, and this number is increasing all the time. Our smartphones have become so magnetic. We feel a constant pull from our phones to check if anyone has emailed us or liked or commented on a photo or a recent post, or to keep up on the latest news or sports scores. This addiction to our phones is massively distracting and interruptive and gets in the way of us producing our best work. It used to be the little red light from our Blackberry that resu lted in us incessantly checking our phones, but now it is a little beep or a vibration of our smartphone. With the invention of smartwatches, we now cant escape the interruptions as we receive a vibration on the wrist any time an email, text message, or app update is received. With advancing technology, there is an increasing number of sources of distraction and interruption.Every time we are interrupted or distracted it breaks any concentration we may have been trying to cultivate. When our focus is broken our productive energy is wasted and it takes time and energy to get focus back. It is also so easy to get pulled into the thing that has interrupted you. You see a notification that someone has liked a LinkedIn article you have posted, so you go to see who it was. Once there, you see that there are other updates and one of your former colleagues has published an interesting new article. You decide to read it. On and on, one thing leads to another, and before you know it youve was ted an hour of your time that could have been spent working toward your highest priorities. To help simplify your life and optimize your productivity and impact we need to have the discipline to not be tempted by our magnetic technology products. But you can make it easy on yourself by taking a few deliberate steps to remove or reduce the risk that our focus is broken during our productive times.Turn off all notifications on your smartphone. Go into the settings and turn off each notification associated with your email and for each application. If youre not using it, switch it off. Any time youre not using an application or internet page on your computer, exit out of it. The more things you have up in your computer, the more scattered you will feel and the more risk there is that youll get pulled from the most important work. According to one study, 57% of interruptions at work resulted from either social media tools or switching among disparate stand-alone applications.Schedule produ ctive time on your calendar. During this period exit out of your email and enable the do not disturb function on instant messenger. Close all non-core applications on the computer. This means no internet. Turn off your phone or put it in do not disturb mode. And, if need be and you have a private office, inform your colleagues that if your door is closed you do not want to be disturbed.Allocate time for everything else. Schedule breaks on your calendar when you can catch up on your social media platforms, read up on the latest news, or engage in banter with your colleagues. In this day and age, the opportunity to simplify our lives is significant. By decluttering, getting clear on whats truly important, and reducing distractions and interruptions you can build the skills and discipline to simplify your world, get a handle on complexity, and take control of your productive capacity. While each component has been somewhat skimmed over in this article out of necessity, our smart habits training program goes into each of these categories in much more detail and provides exercises to nurture the habits.Jesse Newton is the author of Simplify Work Crushing Complexity to Liberate Innovation, Productivity and Engagement. These 7 Workplace Trends Will Dominate Your Workplace by 2030

These 7 Workplace Trends Will Dominate Your Workplace by 2030These 7 Workplace Trends Will Dominate Your Workplace by 2030The world is changing rapidly and we are curious what the future has in store for us. We shiver with apprehension when it comes to the rise robots and artificial intelligence. But is there a reason to fear a jobless future? Its true that technological advances are eliminating jobs and tasks, but primarily those that require low-level professional qualifications. Whether it comes to automated parking booths or supermarket tills, what we are witnessing is the erosion of low paid jobs. But emerging forms of technology and automation are making mora highly qualified professionals obsolete, too. Professions like a financial analyst, lawyer and tax expert are waning, and theres nothing we can do about it.In 2000, more than 600 traders worked in Goldman Sachss New York headquarters. Seven years later, the number of equity traders reduced to two because algorithms handled by computer engineers were finally able to take over the rest of the work. And the same pattern keeps repeating in other Wall Street firms. Computerized trading has grown to a point when self-completing online tax returns and machine learning approaches to accountancy are seriously threatening menschengerecht-dominated jobs in financial services. So which seven trends are about to dominate in the years to come?1. Impermanence.First, we need to say farewell to permanent contracts and embrace the era of self-employment and freelancing. The future asks for flexibility. According to McKinsey Global Institute, as many as 30% of workers in the US and Europe earn a portion of their income through independent work - freelance activities, self-employment, or rapidly expanding digital gig or sharing economy platforms. This also means that people can no longer rely on social safety nets of insurance, medical coverage, social security or paid vacation. In fact, 94% of the new jobs in the US create d between 2005 and 2015 were those that gave workers no protection at all.In the short run, the trend of impermanence is sure to contribute to increased worker vulnerability and challenge the relevance of trade unions in the years to come.2. Life expectancy. Thanks to the high quality of health care, humans are today living longer than ever before. The life expectancy rises steadily by 2 years every decade. And in Japan, Italy and Germany, womens life expectancy is approaching 90 and men have already reached 80. But lets have a look at the consequences, too. First, the number of people whose retirement lasts longer than their career is rising. According to a recent study, there are more than 700,000 people in Italy that have been pensioners for at least 35 years. And the sustainability of such model is questionable, to say the least.Second, we conventionally divide our life into three parts - education, career and retirement. But does drawing clear lines help in todays world? Due to the stiffness of our education systems and an ever-increasing youth experience gap, young people will need to focus on living a life of continuous learning instead.3. New professions.Theres no need to worry about gloom and doom scenarios for massive unemployment. So far, technology has created more jobs than destroyed.According to a recent McKinsey study, more than 50% of new jobs in the US are brand new occupations. Apparently, we are about to see different kinds of professionals that will be in high demand in the years to come.Hiring managers will go to great lengths to find experts in artificial intelligence, the internet of things, specialists in cyber-security, internet governance, social media, startups, machine learning, robotics, 3D printing, autonomous vehicles, Blockchain and many other fields we dont have names for yet. And salaries for these emerging professions are sure to be sky-high, too4. Women.Despite the rising level of awareness, gender pay gap is real. Women stil l tend to be employed in roles that fail to meet their level of skill and expertise. But this is going to change soon. Theres no doubt that future belongs to women and their oben liegend skills.Whereas men feel natural in the world competition, women have abetter capacity for collaboration, empathy, creativity, listening skills and lifelong learning. Its exactly these human characteristics that make them more suited for jobs created by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.5. Employee empowerment. In order to survive, companies need to reflect rapid changes in the job market and abandon outdated concepts and ideas. We need to stop building stiff companies that build upon the principles of the First Industrial Revolution. Workers in such companies are still seen as machines or even as replaceable spare parts. The workplace of the future will do away with the constant nightmare of losing ones job or giving up ones dignity. Companies will revisit their values and empower their employees so th at they will feel free to work to the best of their ability.6. Anywhereness.Working from home has become an increasingly viable option for many employees. But with the era of ubiquitous world wide web access fast approaching, workers of the future will have even more control. In tomorrows society, your work is no longer a place that you go to - it is something that you do, independent of location. The ultimate flexibility will allow us to work anytime, anywhere, and with any device. Thanks to flexible work schedules and environments, our work wont confine us to a specific time and place any longer.7. Universal basic income.Who wouldnt like to earn money without working? But dont get mistaken - the concept of universal basic income goes much deeper than that.Governments believe the policy could help people live more healthy, prosperous lives. It should be a solution to major problems like crime, poverty, malnutrition, diseases and debts.Basic income pilots have already been launched i n a number of countries over the world, and the idea is on the verge of reaching mainstream politics. The concept has been endorsed by many high-profile Silicon Valley executives, too. While Mark Zuckerberg sees it a cushion that will allow everyone to try new things, Elon Musk sees it as an economic response to the arrival of increased automation and intelligent technologies that will eventually overtake the human capacity for work. But how to finance such an insanely expensive project? Well, Bill Gates seems to have an answer. He suggested introducing a tax on machines like robots and AI that would help offset the social impact of automation and foster the sustainability of the universal basic income. These workplace trends are already here.Every change happens for a reason. These seven emerging trends in the nature of work and its organization share a common goal ofmaking peoples lives more meaningful.Machines can live without a salary or satisfaction. But we humans are driven by p urpose, autonomy, capacity for self-improvement, and a deep sense of fairness and transparency. So its very likely machines will keep taking over mediocre or trivial jobs that workers of the future will no longer be interested in. People, in turn, will be free to work on positions that require values and creativity. And thats a far more optimistic prospect, isnt it?Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

3 Job Search Mistakes You Cant Make If Youre Age 50+

3 Job Search Mistakes You Cant Make If Youre Age 50+3 Job Search Mistakes You Cant Make If Youre Age 50+Jewel, I had a fabulous interview and I am positive I really connected with the person. But 4 days after the fact, Im still waiting. Is this a bad or good sign?Well, lets not wait and lets not wonder. Instead, lets take action. Action is the vehicle that drives your job search. You control the vehicle, and therefore, you hold mora power than you think. The job search mistakes you cant afford to make especially if youre age 50+ primarily have to do with all this wondering and waiting thats keeping you right where you are. Here are 3 key areas where you can snap out of itDid You Hit The Apply Now Button, And Then Just Wait? The moment you hit apply, is most definitely not the end. There should be some preliminary research, then you should apply, then you should reach out and touch someone almost at the same time. If youre not taking all these steps, the roles youre applying for are simply disappearing into that black hole we all know as our friendly little Internet. You can find the relevant person on LinkedIn, and send them a SHORT message specifically stating that youve just applied for the role, youre interested in their organization for some specific reason that youve researched, and you have specific areas of expertise name what they are that will prove to be beneficial in the role. Are You Looking At Openings, Or Opportunities?Theres a huge gap between whats listed online and whats actually available. I know you cringe when I say hidden job market, what is that, anyway? And how am I supposed to find it? The hidden job market is not as big of a secret as you think.Let me share with you my own personal career path, starting from college In my senior year, I identified people who were working in jobs that I wanted to work. I didnt want to take their jobs. Rather, these were teams and I knew the organizations could use another talented person.I made my ask. I said, Who can I speak to in your organization who may consider me. I got the name and number. I was a tad shy so I wrote a letter (email hadnt been invented yet just snail mail), just 1-page, noting my education and relevant internship experience, what I knew about the organization, and the skills I had that would be a good fit.The 1st such letter I wrote got me a response the next day. I interviewed that week. I started work the following week. I went on to work there for a decade.Well, that was when you were coming out of college, you might say, How can I do that now when Im trying to get a 6-figure role on the VP-level?How can you do that now?How can you not?The fundamentals dont change. They still work.Who Are You Waiting On To Magically Come Through For You?Is your networking actually working for you? It wont go anywhere if youre asking people you know if they, know anybody, or know of any openings. People cant act on vague information. All they can do is tell you theyll keep y ou in mind, which is also nice and vague and, therefore, useless. This is not a game in which the more people to whom you mention youre networking or looking, the higher the likelihood that someone will magically come through with that perfect position thats right up your alley.Thats not how any of this works.Specificity is key here. What is the level of position you want? What is the primary function you want to do? What are the top 5 employers youre looking at? Roll those points up into 2 sentences and say that when youre networking. Its a lot easier to get a response when you make a specific statement than when you dont otherwise, youre putting the burden on other people to do the thinking and the work for you.I dont want you to wonder and I dont want you to wait. Id much rather show you how to advocate for yourself to advance your own career. There are some super-simple steps you can take to cut your job search time in half. Thats what I go over in my free presentation, 5 Secre t Job Search Hacks For The Age 50+ Job-Hunter. Register for that today so you just dont waste any more time, or let the interviews you did manage to get just go radio silent. If youre ready to invest in your job search success and would like to find out about the concierge 11 program Ill customize especially for you, simply head over to Job Search Conciergeto apply, and well have a sales conversation about how this program can be of benefit. Study This one thing you do every day is detrimental to your health

Study This one thing you do every day is detrimental to yur healthStudy This one thing you do every day is detrimental to your healthIts become almost instinctual. We slump into our office chairs, straining forward to see our laptop screens clearly. Our heads cock forward at an unnatural angle as our shoulders rise higher and higher. And then we wonder why we all have headaches at the end of the day.At this point, the negative health repercussions from bad posture are all but established. Theres a reason why were constantly told to sit up - what may have once started out as a command about appearances has proven to have real implications for our wellness. But while we may know somewhere deep down that were theoretically notlage supposed to slouch, a recent study published in the journal Biofeedback indicates that were not as cognizant of the bad habit in practice.Researchers conducted two experiments that got to the root of our posture problems. In one, they had 87 students try to ro tate their heads from side to side with their heads erect or thrust forward. The vast majority of them said they could rotate their head more easily and with a more generous range of motion when it was erect. Then came the big test. When 125 students were asked to scrunch their necks for 30 seconds, almost all of them reported pain including pressure in the head, a stiff neck, eye tension, and headaches. And heres the doozy Most participants were totally surprised that 30 seconds of neck scrunching would rapidly increase symptoms and induce discomfort, researchers wrote. As we sit in our offices all day, were unknowingly causing ourselves pain when we give in to our baser posture-related instincts. But at least acknowledging that there is a problem is always the first step to a solution. So heres to a belated New Years resolution to be more aware of how we sit. It may seem like a passive part of our day, but sitting wrong could actually set us back dramatically on our pathways to welln ess.

The employees guide to netiquette

The employees guide to netiquette The employees guide to netiquettePosted October 13, 2011, by Andrea Riddell With the unlimited power of the World Wide Web and the proliferation of social media platforms, it is nave to think that ur online presence has nothing to do with our real life reputation. Whether we like it or not, our two personas are intertwined and our online activity can often affect our professional image and hinder our job prospects. According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, young people will one day have to change their names to escape from their online mistakes. To avoid this dilemma its best to act with your wits about you now and avoid any such unnecessary action in the future. To minimise the risk of negative repercussions from our online activities its vital to exercise network etiquette, otherwise known as netiquette, not only when were at work but at all times. 1. Control your own presence By creating your own online presence in the form of social media profiles, y ou will be able to have some control over what is published about you in cyberspace. With an active online presence you will be able to monitor and filter the content you want other people to see and portray an accurate, or rather positive, image of yourself. However, there is a difference between creating an online presence and saturating the market. Remember, the mora profiles you have, the more you will have to monitor and update. 2. Terms and conditions With each online profile you create or website you sign up to, make sure you are up-to-date with the privacy settings. With sites like Facebook constantly updating their privacy regulations, make sure you are aware of what is visible to the general public and what can only be seen by your friends. And, while ticking I Agree without reading pages and pages of terms and conditions can seem like the easy option at the time, it is best to make sure youre not selling your soul to the devil before you sign your life away. 3. Keep tabs on yourself While Googling yourself can sound like an egotistical task, it will give you an idea of what information people can access about you from a simple web search. If you come across any unsavoury information or images of yourself, find ways to erase or limit the content. Signing up to receive Google Alerts every time your name is published online is another way for you to keep on top of any information that concerns you. 4. Emailing in the office There are so many issues concerning the use of email tone, length, relevancy, informal versus formal, smiley face versus no smiley face that sometimes its easier to walk from your desk to your desired recipients desk and converse like they used to do in the olden days. Email and online policies can differ from workplace to workplace so its best to become familiar with your own workplaces policy before you start forwarding dubious chain mails to your team. Be aware that there is always a backup system for office computers, so keep your emailing relatively business related. Messages should be short and to-the-point. Remember you have no control over what the recipient or recipients do with their copy of the email. Refrain from using excessive capital letters and emoticons unless youre informally addressing your immediate work team. 5. Sharing is caring The power of the Internet is in its ability to bring together millions of people and inconceivable amounts of information. Social media sites such as Twitter have helped to keep this ball rolling, making it easier to share everything from your daily activities and opinions to information and news. Dont be afraid to offer your two cents and share with others what you believe to be interesting. However, what you share and how you share it should depend on the situation. Refrain from forwarding on annoying chain emails or attaching large files to emails, especially to clients or strangers. In the workplace, share information that is relevant to the recipients role or industry, or related to their interests. 6. Remember where you are and who you are It is so easy to feel invincible when youre surfing the Net in the comfort of your living room. However, the Internet is a glass room of activity and your actions and reactions are there for the world to see. Refrain from pulling a Stephanie Rice* and using offensive language in a public forum, especially if youre a public figure. Dont say anything you wouldnt say to someone face-to-face. It is easy to think that being online makes you invisible, however this is never the case. Like a real-life crime scene, your online activity leaves evidence that can be easily traced back to you. 7. Be smart It is easy to forget that the Internet is a giant invisible storage warehouse, where uploaded information and interactions float around, bumping into binary code. Once something is uploaded into cyberspace, there is a great chance it will come back to haunt you, even if you think you have gotten rid of all th e evidence. Remove photos and comments revealing any illegal or unsavoury behaviour. Never make negative comments about your work, work colleagues or anyone on social media sites. This has the potential to turn around and bite you on the arse. And never publicise that youre taking a sickie, especially if youre not actually sick.

Battery Capacity Gets a Boost

Battery Capacity Gets a Boost Battery Capacity Gets a Boost Battery Capacity Gets a Boost Lithium ion is todays go-to battery technology, but storage and safety are far from ideal. Improving these cells electrodes could make next-generation batteries both more powerful and less flammable.A batterys negative electrode, its anode, is only as good as the number of lithium ions it can share. That is why Erik Herbert of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, wants to make anodes from metallic lithium, the densest source of lithium ions available. To do that, Herbert and his colleagues need to understand lithiums behavior. Yet lithiums high reactivity, which makes it a prized material for batteries, also makes it hard to measure. Looking at high-purity lithium films requires having a really well-controlled environment, Herbert said.Studying lithiums nanoscale mechanical properties requires specialized measurement tools and atmospheres. Image Michigan Technological UniversityHe welch es drawn to this project by an issue that plagues all lithium-ion batteries Repeated charging cycles generate pressure that causes lithium to grow tiny fingers called dendrites. They can push through even harder solid ceramic electrolyte that separates one electrode from anotherand short circuit the battery. For You Capturing and Reusing Wasted Energy with Nanopeapods To understand dendrite growth, Herbert needed to measure the pressure response of microns-thick lithium samples. First, his colleagues at Oak Ridge National Laboratory lay down lithium under an ultrahigh vacuum. This yielded samples comparable to lithium electrodes in thin-film batteries. Those samples arrive in Michigan under argon, where Herbert slices them for testing with tools originally meant for cutting stained glass. Then his team tests them with a nanoindenter and an optical microscope inside a glovebox that controls atmospheric oxygen and water. The glovebox suppresses lithiums propensity to react with air. Even so, the group has to perform its tests within a week or two to ensure the nanoindenter sinks into pure lithium rather than lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate. After hundreds of load-response experiments, Herbert and his team have a hypothesis that explains how dendrites penetrate harder electrolytes. It turns out that lithium is much stronger at smaller scales. As a battery charges, pressure builds quickly in a tiny dendrite, and it forces its way into any defects in the hard electrolyte. Not many people have focused on lithiums fundamental properties this way. Mechanical behavior is going to be somewhere near the bottom of the list when you think about factors that are really mission-critical in determining device performance, said Herbert. He and his colleagues, however, have evidence that mechanical properties play an important role in battery reliability.Next, Herbert and his team will look into the behavior of solid electrolytes and how lithium responds when attached to dif ferent electrolyte materials.Menaka Wilhelm is an independent technology writer.Read MoreRecord Efficiency Highs on SolarBeer Could Make Better Fuel than EthanolThe Great Ocean Cleanup Begins For Further Discussion

Survey finds that the majority of people hate emails

Survey finds that the majority of people hate emaillesSurvey finds that the majority of people hate emailsThe degree of science applied to the mystery that surrounds email reply rates borders on embarrassing. Researchers will sift through thousands upon thousands of emails just to determine exactly how much more effective the greeting Hi is vs. Hello or Cheers Not that were not grateful. Few things rival the stress induced by attempting to successfully suss out the tight walk that is crafting a work email that is both professional and personal or the tension induced after hitting the send button just a second before you realized that you forgot to change your email signature from Marty Graw. Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut maybe we should all be spending a little less time worrying about the formality of starting an email with the word hey, given a new workplace statistics r eport just revealed that theres a 60% chance it will never get read by anybody but you. Ill communication Our pals over at Slick Text surveyed 1,000 employed American adults via Pollfish, about their feelings toward workplace communication. As it turns out, everyone really hates emails. They stress people out and insist on a tone of urgency that makes recipients feel overwhelmed. Nearly half of the respondents involved in Slick Texts survey said that receiving fewer emails at work would go a long way to increase their job satisfaction. Thirty percent of participants reported never checking their work emails after they punched out, which is fair, and even suggested by many health professionals, but an additional two-thirds said they ignored emails entirely, irrespective of when they received them. The study expounds,About a third (34%) of those surveyed said they sometimes ignore HR emails. A total of 5.7% of respondents indicated they always ignore emails from HR. That means, at any given time, there could be about 40% of the workplace who arent reading emails from the HR department. If HR has to deliver a message of exigence to an off-clock worker, 43.9% prefer a text over email, if they have to be notified at all. Affirmative Slack-tion For whatever reason, theres this archaic formality attached to the traditional modes of electronic mail, that many professionals find hard to bypass. The new study underscores Slack as one of the most popular and promising solutions to this dilemma. Its a company-wide chat platform that is inherently professional even though it feels more like texting. Its much harder to ignore an HR email about Seat-sniffing-Danif a Borat gif is attached. If Slack isnt your speed, there are a bounty of digital ways to diversify communication. Many companies have even adopted Skype, mass text message systems and even G-Chat.Alas, sometimes a physical dialogue is simply unavoidable, like in the instances wherein an email is too important to ris k getting overlooked, The authors over at Slick Text add,Providing an update and answering questions in a weekly meeting could eliminate a lot of back and forth throughout the week. Plus, if there is an email that employees need to watch for, you can give them the heads up at this meeting so theyll know not to ignore it.

7 clues youre about to be fired and what you can do about it

7 clues you're about to be fired â€" and what you can do about it 7 clues you're about to be fired - and what you can do about it If you’re feeling that Monday morning dread every day of the week - you may be onto something. While it’s not always a great idea to trust your gut about every single work issue, here’s when it may be worth wondering if your job’s in danger.1. You’re not that busyRyan Naylor, Founder of LocalWork.com, offered a few hints to keep an eye out for if you think you might be fired for performance reasons: “You might notice that you aren’t getting handed as many projects as you were before. Something might have happened, or maybe there was a series of events that caused these concerns to arise.”2. You’re given loads of days offBelieve it or not, sometimes good things disguise really crummy things. If your boss is thinking about firing you, it’s entirely possible you’ll suddenly find yourself with a lot of vacation days. “Maybe they readily grant you days off so they don’t have to face you as they plan for your termination,” Naylor said.3. They’re cooling offIf your boss or manager sense that you’ll soon be on the way out, you may suddenly find yourself “Being excluded from important department meetings that you are customarily included in,” according to Scott Samuels of Horizon Hospitality. You might be receiving fewer lunch invitations or group emails, and Naylor says “There could be a lack of eye contact and a disconnection that feels dismissive.”4. Your company is downsizing“If you think the company is downsizing and your position may be eliminated, look for worried managers, a lot of executive meetings and listen for break room rumors,” Naylor says.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day? Sign up for  Morning Motivation! It’s our friendly Facebook robot that will send you a quick note every weekday morning to help you start strong. Sign up here by clicking Get Started!Ask yourself if what your department produces is still in need, or whether there’s a slow-down in demand for your services in general. And while you’re at it, Naylor says, think about whether your department is “bloated during a time of financial distress for the company.”If any of these signs ring true, Naylor says you have to consider the tough fact that you may be let go. “There isn’t much you can do if downsizing is imminent,” he says. What you should do though, is start planning. “Your layoff may include a severance package, but this doesn’t mean you should take a vacation,” Naylor says. “The longer you are unemployed, the less appealing you will be to recruiters and hiring managers.”5. They’re playing the fieldSamuels said a sure sign you’re about to be fired is finding a listing on an internet job board of your job (or one that’s really similar) posted by your company. Even worse though, is when you find a posting of your job in your city listed as “confidential.”6. There’s a new kid in townSamuels said a sure sign you’re probably going to be fired is when “other individuals star t becoming overly involved in your department and/or with your responsibilities,” specifically ones they’d never been previously involved in.7. You’re on probationFinding out that you’ve been put on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) by your direct supervisor and given a specific time frame to correct deficiencies, is never a great sign, according to Samuels. What you can doSo, should you give up entirely and hand in your resignation? Not just yet.Be proactive: As painful as it feels, Samuels said you should “be proactive in sitting down with your immediate supervisor and discussing/resolving issues that could result in termination.”Step up your game: Samuels also advises putting in extra time and hours to “go above and beyond to show your commitment to the company.Consult with HR: If at all possible, Samuels thinks it’s a good idea to “Sit down with your Human Resource Manager/Director and advise them about your observations. Ask them if there is anything that yo u need to be concerned about. Be tactful and careful when doing this so you don’t come across as being overly paranoid.”Make nice: Naylor says: “If you want to keep your job, there are some things you can do. The fact that you weren’t fired out of hand might mean that they are hesitating, considering whether you are still a value-add. Show them that you are. Apologize for the incidents that led to this precarious position you are in. Show humility. Offer to show them improvement over a specific period of time. Be specific and, once again, be humble.”Get moving: And if the inevitable is just around the corner, start planning now. Naylor says: “Your layoff may include a severance package, but this doesn’t mean you should take a vacation. The longer you are unemployed, the less appealing you will be to recruiters and hiring managers.”

Saying Thank You Is Good for Your Career - The Muse

Saying Thank You Is Good for Your Career - The Muse Saying Thank You Is Good for Your Career Last weekend, my husband and I attended a thank you dinner hosted by a local equine therapy program. We support the program because it provides an amazing service to our community: Children and adults with any kind of special needs- physical, medical, emotional, or behavioral- can participate in therapeutic horseback riding at little to no cost. The program is personally meaningful because our oldest child has special needs and benefits from it. However, we were never interested in any kind of thanks or special recognition for supporting the program; we simply appreciate what the organization provides and want to be part of its success. But you know what? It was really nice to receive such a kind expression of gratitude through the dinner. That kind of appreciation doesn’t have to be limited to your personal life. Saying “Thank you” is an often overlooked way to invest in yourself professionally. So, as we enter the beginning of the season of thankfulness and gratitude, here’s how to make the most of saying those two small words. Recognize Help When You Get It It can be easy to blow through a busy day, never slowing down enough to recognize when- or how much- someone helps you and instead, overemphasizing your own contributions. But that can be a dangerous habit. Think about a time when you helped someone, but he or she couldn’t be bothered to say, “Hey, thanks!” Do you recall that event fondly? Do you associate it with positive feelings toward the person? I didn’t think so. To use gratitude as a way to build your reputation, relationships, and career, you need to start paying attention to the times you benefit from someone else. How has someone helped you today? This week? The past six months? Maybe someone talked you through a minor technical glitch, brought you a refill on your coffee, or lent you a pen in a meeting. Be sure to actually say the words “Thank you” for these small gestures. When someone goes beyond a small, simple gesture to assist you, consider sending a thank you email, card, or even a small gift. Maybe a colleague stayed late to help you work through an issue with one of your projects. Does she like cupcakes? Try surprising her with her favorite flavor. Maybe a colleague put in a good word for you with a key player in his network. An email or handwritten thank you card is in order. Perhaps your supervisor went to bat to get you a significant raise or a promotion. That’s also worth a handwritten note or a reasonable gift, like flowers, lunch, or a surprise delivery of his or her favorite order at Starbucks. Be Genuine in Your Appreciation I have two thank you notes pinned to my bulletin board right now. The author sent each note after an event I was involved with, noting details that let me know she understood how much work went into each function. I would bend over backward for her because I’m so grateful that she notices and genuinely appreciates the things I do. The keyword here, however, is “genuine.” Tossing a quick “thanks” over your shoulder as an afterthought or sending a blanket, “Thanks for all you do” email that doesn’t acknowledge a person’s specific contributions won’t build relationships- and in fact, may actually do more damage than good. After a while, shallow, absentminded gratitude conveys you really don’t know (or care) what the person on the receiving end does. That’s a recipe for resentment. On the other hand, say your note sounds something like this: “The unveiling event was wonderful. I know you put a lot of work in behind the scenes to make it come together. Every detail seemed to be in order, from the food to the programs to the speakers. You did an excellent job!” Those details convey that even if you don’t know exactly what the recipient does, you understand the effort behind the results, and you care enough to note it. When you’re saying thanks, specific statements go a lot further than vague, blanket statements. Reap the Benefits When you start paying attention to the ways people help you and expressing genuine gratitude for that help, get ready to reap the rewards. Research links gratitude to a number of personal benefits, including increased happiness, improved sleep, better overall health, and improved relationships. If, by practicing gratitude, you’re sleeping well and are generally happier, then you’re likely to be more productive and satisfied at work. In addition, your professional relationships will benefit from your attitude of gratitude. Just think: Have you ever helped a colleague, who later took all of the credit for that work? Now, do you remember someone who went out of his or her way to recognize and thank you for something you did? Which person are you most likely to help if he or she comes calling for your support again? The latter, of course. You want to be the gracious person people don’t mind helping. The year is quickly coming to a close. For the rest of 2015, I challenge you to pay attention to the many ways people around you lend a hand and say “Thank you” to someone at least one time each day. Beyond that, think of how someone has helped you in an important way over the past year, and write that person a genuine and specific note. With a little gratitude, you’ll reap rewards in your personal and professional life- and start the new year on the right foot! Photo of writing note courtesy of Shutterstock.

How To Tailor Your Resume To the Job Description

How To Tailor Your Resume To the Job Description How To Tailor Your Resume To the Job Description If you want your job search to be efficient and effective, preparing your resume shouldn’t be a one-time experience. You’ll receive more responses from interested companies by taking some time to customize your resume for each new job application. Tailoring your resume connects the dots for recruiters and hiring managers who are overwhelmed by a flood of generic applicants. Instead of proving that you’re an experienced professional in general, it shows them that you’re a perfect fit for this specific job. What does it mean to tailor your resume? For most job openings, a particular skill set is desired to perform specific tasks. Tailoring your resume is about recognizing those skills and responsibilities on the job description and making it obvious that you’re up to the task. Your goal is to draw the shortest line possible between your experience and what’s stated in the job description. A job description says, “These are the skills we need and the qualifications we’re looking for.” A generic resume says, “I have all this experience. I’ll leave it up to you to figure out whether I am capable of doing the job.” A tailored resume says, “Here is an easy-to-read roadmap of where I acquired and developed each of your required skills and qualifications.” A tailored resume is for people and technology Not only does this help overloaded recruiters and hiring managers do their jobs, it also optimizes your resume for the technology they use. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are used by 98% of Fortune 500 companies and help recruiters sort, filter, and search incoming resumes. For example, the most popular ATS, Taleo, has a feature that automatically scores and ranks your resume based on how well it matches the job description. And most systems have search functions in which recruiters can plug in specific skills and experience to surface applicants with the qualifications they value most. If you applied through an ATS, there’s a strong chance your generic resume wasn’t even read. How do you know which skills will help you score well or come up in a search? It’s all in the job description. How to tailor your resume to the job description Open up your resume. Compare it to the job description. Go line by line through the description and ask yourself these questions: Does my resume clearly state that I can do this? How quickly can I point to this skill from the description in my resume? Test yourself. Am I using the same language  found in the job description? Match skills and keywords Mirroring the language, keywords, and buzzwords found on the job description is the easiest way prove youre a better match. Start with the job title. A recruiters first search will be for people that have done the job before, so find a place for it on your resume. If you havent actually held the job before, you can list it under your name at the top or as part of a  summary section. The next most important resume keywords are hard skills. These are often technical skills learned through experience, like project management, reception, writing, or payroll. Whether a recruiter is skimming your resume or an ATS is analyzing it, these are the words that will catch their attention. Match them verbatim when possible. What are they most interested in? Pay special attention to the skills mentioned first or multiple times. If the job description asks for something that you forgot or deemphasized, add it prominently. Start each new job entry in your  work experience section with skills and qualifications that are found in the job description, even if they werent the most important part of your day-to-day responsibilities. But never lie on your resume. Few applicants have every skill and meet every qualification. Tailoring your resume is about making sure the recruiter or hiring manager  notices  the ones you do have. Get help tailoring your resume Manually tailoring your resume takes a lot of work. Thankfully, Jobscan specializes in tools that speed up this process. For example, with Power Edit, the most important skills and keywords missing from your resume update as you work. You just upload your resume, paste in the job description, follow the keyword and formatting suggestions, watch your score go up, then export your tailored resume. Dynamic resume tailoring, ATS optimization, and formatting all in one place with Power Edit. For a closer look, check out this video. Additional resume tailoring tips A generic resume is about you while a tailored resume makes it about them Using bullet points instead of big paragraphs on your resume will make your matching qualifications more skimmable Corporate recruiters prefer to see skills in context. If they see a skill on your resume, they need to understand how and why you used it Use accomplishments with dollar amounts, percentages, or other measurables to prove your effectiveness Tailoring is also about removing information that distracts from your top skills. Look at every line on your resume through the lens of, Does this prove Im a great fit for  this job.

New Film Addresses Engineering Ethics Issues

New Film Addresses Engineering Ethics Issues New Film Addresses Engineering Ethics Issues New Film Addresses Engineering Ethics Issues Julie, Henry and Laura Laura with her Boss at the state department of transportation Julie with her team working on the smart highway design project Lauraattendingameeting at the state department of transportation Al Kornhauser, Associate Professor, Virginia Tech. Member, ASME Committee on Ethical Standards and Review The National Institute of Engineering Ethics (NIEE) has released a new film, Henrys Daughters, which addresses some of the difficult ethical decisions that may face practicing engineers.ASME helped support the films production, and DVD copies are available for loan to ASME Sections and Student Sections. Henrys Daughters focuses on the ethical problems facing two sisters, Laura and Julie, working on a smart highway design project. Laura, the older sister, is an experienced engineer supervising the project for the state department of transportation while Julie, the younger, is a recent graduate employed by one of the project contractors. As the project proceeds the sisters gradually become aware of questionable behavior by their co-workers and by their father, a retired engineer working as a lobbyist. By the time Laura decides to blow the whistle, both sisters ethics have, to some extent, been compromised. The primary ethical focus of the film is on the problem of unfair competition, but it addresses many aspects of engineering ethics: conflicts of interest, intellectual properties, privacy, and gender issues. The characters in Henrys Daughters face realistic ethical problems without clear-cut solutions. The best of them find themselves trapped in compromising situations despite their principled intentions. The worst of them dont think of themselves as corrupt they just believe that they are conducting business as usual. The films ambiguities generated considerable controversy when it premiered at the 2010 Frontiers in Education conference in Washington, D.C. The film is 32 minutes long and is subtitled in 13 languages. It is accompanied by a study guide that can be used to guide group discussion of the films ethical issues. Henrys Daughters is the third film on engineering ethics produced by the NIEE. In 1989 Gilbane Gold addressed issues related to the environmental impact of engineering decisions, while 2003s Incident at Morales focused on public and worker safety. NIEE has also published an ethics reference book: Engineering Ethics, Concepts, Viewpoints, Cases, and Codes (2008). The NIEE was founded in 1988 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. In 2001, NIEE merged with the Murdough Center for Engineering Professionalism at Texas Tech University. The organization exists to encourage the study, application, and promotion of ethics in engineering practice and education. The NIEEs Executive Board consists of representatives from the ASME and other engineering societies, as well as at-large members representing a wide segment of the engineering profession. To purchase this training DVD from NIEE it would cost $500. However, ASME is loaning copies to senior and student sections for free viewing and training.Contact your section leadertoday toensure your section takes advantage of this special opportunity. AttentionASME Senior Sections and Student Sections: To borrow a copy of Henrys Daughters for presentation at a section meeting contact ASME staff member David Soukup at soukupd@asme.org.The study guide may be downloaded from the NIEE.

In-Person Cold Calling Strategies

In-Person Cold Calling Strategies In-Person Cold Calling Strategies Before voicemail and email became part of everyday life, many salespeople preferred to visit prospects in person instead of calling them on the phone. In-person visits arent as common today, especially in B2B sales, which means it may be more useful than you think. After all, if youre the first salesperson who has stopped by a particular office (in a long time or ever), the novelty can help you get your foot in the door. Benefits of In-Person Cold Calling Visiting a prospect in person gives you access to clues that you would never have a chance to uncover over the phone. How the prospects home or place of business looks is a major indicator of the type of person they are. Is it shabby or perfectly maintained? Is the landscaping lush or is it all gravel and concrete? How large is the house or office? What colors and decorations did they choose? All of these are clues to the prospects state of mind, which can tell you what approach will work best to secure an appointment. Dropping in on an office allows you to talk to people who arent decision makers themselves, but who might have useful information about the company in general. For example, a few minutes with the receptionist can yield information such as the name(s) of the decision maker(s) or purchasing agent, how they feel about the product they currently own, what their schedule is like, and so on. In some cases, you wont be able to simply wander the building at will because of security. When this happens, jot down the company names from the building directory so that you can look them up later for a phone call or email. Dont forget to chat with the people manning the security desk, as you may learn a useful tidbit or two â€" or at the very least, leave them with a pleasant memory of you for when you hopefully return later with an appointment. When You Arrive When you arrive at a prospects door, whether its an office or a home, you should give a reason for being there. In-person cold calling works extremely well in conjunction with a nearby appointment because then you can say something like, “I was just working with your neighbors, and I have a few minutes until my next appointment, so Id be happy to do a 15-minute financial assessment for you at no charge,” or whatever type of assessment matches up with your product area. Another way to approach a new prospect is to say, “This is my first time visiting your neighborhood/building/block and I wanted to introduce myself and get to know some of the people here.” This technique works best with an extremely low-pressure sales strategy â€" your goal should be to get the name and phone number of the decision maker (you can do this by exchanging business cards in a B2B scenario) and perhaps ask a few questions to see if this is a qualified prospect for your product. You can then follow up with either a phone call or a second in-person visit to get an appointment. You probably wont get to sit down with a decision maker then and there â€" like a cold call over the phone, your main goal will be to set a ?future appointment. However, if your timing is just right, you may be invited to present your case immediately. So bring along whatever tools and information youll need for a full sales presentation. Who knows, you might just walk out of there with a brand-new sale in hand.??

13 Must-Have Words to Include In Your Resume

13 Must-Have Words to Include In Your Resume 13 Must-Have Words to Include In Your Resume Steer clear of overused clichés . Misspelled words are immediate grounds for denial. Words like “rockstar” and “synergy” are so 2015. We’ve all read about what not to include in a resume. After all, one of Glassdoor’s most popular articles,   “21 Words to Never Include In Your Resume,” is bookmarked even by our staffers who want to gut-check before making resume faux pas. However, it’s time to talk about what works should be included in your resume. Diction or word choice is important when it comes to drafting your resume, not just to ensure that your resume is reviewed positively by software , but also because you want to wow recruiters with your skills, competencies and relevant credentials. “ The words used show what level the candidates is at in their career,” says Susan Joyce, owner and operator of Job-Hunt.org , the guide for a smarter, safer job search. “If I picked up a resume for a C-suite candidate who chose vague descriptives, they would immediately be discredited. Some might think a candidate’s experience outweighs the actual text of a resume, but this is often not the case. If a hiring manager doesn’t see key indicators a candidate is qualified by appropriate word choice or diction at first glance, chances are, the resume will be eliminated before they are even considered.” To help land your resume at the top of the pile, we tapped an expert panel of career coaches, resume writers and experts to ask, “What are the words you like to see on resumes?” Here’s what they had to say. Bookmark this article ASAP! “ If you want to show that you’re results-oriented and hard-working, share the numbers. As they say, the proof is in the pudding,” says job coach Angela Copeland . “For example, rather than stating that you’re an ‘excellent digital marketer,’ prove it. Say something that reflects your actual results, such as, ‘Grew online sales and revenue by 200% in one year.’ Now, that’s impressive!” For life & career coach Jenn DeWall , action verbs are a must on any resume. But not just any action verbs. She advises clients to include verbs that show leadership and transformation. “‘Redesign’ d emonstrates problem-solving skills as well as the ability to think big picture and reduce process inefficiencies.” If clichés are a no-no, simple yet powerful words are your go-tos, according to Glassdoor columnist Anish Majumdar . “ Simple, practical words that denote responsibility have the most  impact. Launched, solved, transformed and optimized are all examples of action  verbs that make you look good without resorting to cliches.” According to master resume writer Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter , this word, along with “conceived and metamorphosed” are “ like a switch, powering up the candidate’s story, showing how they’ve improved, envisioned and transformed their work environments, and therefore, gained revenue, customer growth, reputation, traction,  etc. for their company. They empower and advance the candidate’s story !” “ These words show that the candidate is thinking about their own activities in terms of how they’ll improve the business,” says expert and author of Fearless Salary Negotiation Josh Doody . “Terms like  â€˜hard-working’ don’t do this because working hard doesn’t necessarily produce better results. But focusing on being productive, adding value and making progress show  that the person is tuned in to improving the company, which almost always resonates with hiring managers.” “Anyone can say they ‘led’ a team. Instead, use verbs that really explain what happened in that specific task,” insists Joyce. “Consider the verb ‘orchestrated’ and how it shows, versus just telling, the hiring manager what was accomplished. Orchestrated, by definition, means to arrange and direct. The key is to make a resume better than any great piece of fiction by embracing the storytelling aspect and showing readers your true qualifications.” Rather than  looking for the latest buzzword,  Joyce says job seekers are better off being specific in their resume. “It is really more about choosing words that accurately describe actions or goals that were met. In lieu of hard-working, consider saying what hard work was done, e.g. did a candidate work tirelessly to reach an impossible deadline? It is important to use verbs that really pinpoint what was accomplished, i.e. influenced, improved, achieved, etc. This way, there is no miscommunication about a candidate’s qualifications .” “I like to look for candidates who have had a role in shaping something from idea all the way through execution,” says executive coach Kate O’Sullivan . “One of the main qualities I look for is someone who can take a vague idea or strategic goal and see it through to completion, rather than someone who executes on a plan that’s already been decided. Using these keywords will definitely signal that you’ve had a role in this higher level thinking, and will grab the attention of most hiring managers.” “In general, it’s very hard to convince a resume reader that you possess various soft skills, e.g. team player, just by listing these on your resume,” says O’Sullivan. “If you put yourself in their shoes for a minute you will understand why. Most job seekers want to be desirable and so they list these in-demand skills. But just listing the skill doesn’t do anything to set you apart from the crowd. The most powerful thing you can do is give examples . If you want to show that you are a team player, you can talk about things like working on cross-functional teams, onboarding new hires or developing a cross-training program. By listing concrete accomplishments and projects, you are demonstrating you have these skills in a credible and believable way that will help set you apart.” Doody insists that a resume should be impactful while still skimmable, or able to easily be skimmed by recruiters and hiring managers. “I coach my clients to assume the hiring manager won’t even look at their resume until they’re already in the process of interviewing them ,” says Doody candidly. “Hiring managers don’t sit down the day before an interview, pour a glass of wine and meticulously read through each resume they’re considering. Instead, they scramble to make it to the interview on time, open up the resume as the interview is starting and skim it to find things to talk about.” According to Copeland, a resume - and the job search in general - is not the time to be shy. “Use strong words that emphasize your level of involvement. This isn’t the time to minimize yourself or your contributions. If you were instrumental in a project, replace the word “helped” with the word “spearheaded.” Spearheaded, created and initiated all show that you took the lead and were not merely a participant in a project. Show that you’re dedicated to your work, start to finish. This word, says DeWall, does just that. “If you disregard diction and word choice and think that they don’t carry any weight you’re wrong.  Managers can gauge aptitude, readiness and even your leadership skills from paper,” she adds. Reading and re-reading your resume is just the beginning of the editing process . Don’t believe us? Each of our experts weighed in on the importance of editing a resume. Here are a few of their insights: “Word choice is incredibly important. You only have a limited amount of real estate on your resume, so every single word counts,” says O’Sullivan. “Focus on achievements, quantify where possible and make an effort to tailor your experiences to your target job. It’s more effective to talk about fewer projects and responsibilities more in-depth than to list every single thing you’ve ever done. Along these lines, concentrate on your most recent experience. Edit with the mindset of ‘Does this piece of information directly help sell my experience for this role?’ If not, take it off.” “ The easiest way to improve your choice of words is to read your resume out loud to yourself,” advises Copeland. “This can catch many of the potential issues before anyone else sees it. Then, ask a friend or family member who works in another industry to read it. If they find your resume to be confusing, consider updating the wording so that it’s more clear.” “It’s not just about using the right words, it is equally about teasing out the nuances of your stories and then combining them in a way that is attractive to your target reader: recruiter, hiring manager, etc.,” says Barrett-Poindexter. “You can use all the right ‘nouns and verbs’ that make a resume sing (on the surface), but without the right, focused stories, your resume will fall flat to the intended reader’s eyes and ears.” “ In addition to diction and word choice it’s important to be strategic and concise.   No one has time or energy to invest in a multi-page resume,” insists DeWall. “Make sure that you’re highlighting the most relevant and topical experience necessary for the position.”
